Web 2.0 Social Search Engine on Sale on eBay

Posted by techie on August 4, 2006

Web 2.0 techniques and user generated content to build better systems is a general concept going on right now across the web.

Well, there are some interesting upstarts in this sector, such as OOZM.

It’s tagline: “More relevant results because they are rated by REAL people, not Robots.”

You can check out OOZM eBay Sale. Yes, as is typical in the Web 2.0 field, Guna’s strength is in building new technologies, not building businesses.

Here’s some excerpts from an interview with the creator of OOZM, Guna Deivendran.

According to Guna:
“With millions of websites emerging every single day, there is no point for search engines to index millions of pages. With OOZM we can actually limit the number of indexes and allow people to actually narrow down on relevant results that are recommended by real users.”

And how is the bidding progressing?

Guna says: “I have over 50 bidders watching my bids and I have answered more than 25 questions so far. There are some people who want to grab this for nothing and there are some people that actually understands the business. I am looking for someone who actually understands the concept and is willing to keep the site going.”

I think Guna has a good chance of making a nice chunk of change from his social search engine. A similar meta search engine, Jux2 went for sale last year and was sold for $100,000 on eBay. Few months ago another fresh engine, digforit.com went for sale on eBay for $25,400.

Digg.com’s Kevin Rose’s Rise to Fame – Sticking it to VC’s

Posted by techie on August 4, 2006

Business Week told a very nice story about some of the experience of Digg’s founder Kevin Rose’s rise to fame. My favorite part of the whole article is the discussion about how entrepreneurs are now able to create companies with much less capital(and thus less risk). It even says at one point that it is a great time to be an entrepreneur. I’m sure many venture capitalists could say the same thing about being a venture capitalist with so many different web businesses getting started.

I’ve personally just finished conversations with an angel investor who was ready to fund my idea. Unfortunately, I’m not ready to give up my day job and risk my family’s well being on this idea. I think one day I’m going to have to take the jump and start a business. I just don’t think this is the idea that I want to rely on. It was a tough decision since I really like my idea and I believe that my idea could be worth millions of dollars with very little investment. In fact, our projections seemed to mimic many of the needs of Kevin Rose in starting Digg. Oh well, there will be many more opportunities to do something similar.

In the end, I felt really good about my decision to wait when I read the following about Kevin losing his girlfriend to do Digg:

No matter what happens with Digg, [Kevin] won’t put business first again.

Got an Idea or Invention and Don’t Know What to Do? Don’t Ask ME…

Posted by techie on August 4, 2006

Besides owning a home I think the next biggest American dream is to invent something. It’s pretty much apart of who we are as Americans. It hearkens back to some time in history which I should know about, but don’t because I haven’t taken a history class in years. How do you take that product to market you may ask?

Many of you may want to consider a recent Reality TV show American Inventor. The best part of that show was that the top 4 inventions all got to see their invention do something (even if seeing Jerry Rice wasn’t really helping the invention much). If you win you get $1 million and then it doesn’t matter what you do with your invention.

Granted if you go on the show then you are almost certainly locked into some ugly contract that basically means the show owns your product. Not to mention, your chances of getting on the show are pretty slim.

What other options are out there? One I just came across and prompted this post is a company called Davison Design. This company specializes in being an invention factory. They offer the full range of invention services like: research, industrial design, virtual reality, and product samples to packaging, presentation for possible licensing, and royalty management. Partnering with a company like this sounds like a great option.

Even if you don’t want to work with Davison Design as a partner, you should check out the information they have on the invention process. Davison Design is full of good information for inventors.

If you do want to use Davison Design then here’s a brief overview of what would happen if you worked with Davison Design:

Step 1: Complete our free information form and we will rush you information on pursuing your idea/invention.
Step 2: Within 5-7 business days, you will receive an 8.5 x 11 first class mail envelope containing our brochure and confidential submission form.
Step 3: You review the information, and if need be, receive assistance from our staff in completing the form.
Step 4: You complete and return the confidential idea submission form.
Step 5: Your idea/invention is reviewed to determine if it falls within our scope of services. This is not a review based on patentability or marketability and is not considered a method of choosing or selecting your concept over another submission.
Step 6: You are contacted for a no-cost confidential discussion regarding your idea/invention.
Step 7: If we can offer services, product design research will be conducted on your idea/invention for a fee.
Step 8: We offer contingency representation and attempt to identify corporation(s) that could be a match for your idea/invention.
Step 9: We prepare your idea/invention for presentation to a corporation for a fee.
Step 10: Materials we prepare are presented to you for your review and approval.
Step 11: Once materials are approved by you and additional protection is in place, we ship the product or presentation materials to the corporation.
Step 12: We attempt to license the idea to the corporation if there is interest in the idea/invention.

A Few So You Think You Can Dance(SYTYCD) Factoids – Natalie Fotopoulos and Ivan Koumaev Are Going Home Tonight

Posted by techie on August 4, 2006

If either benji or heidi win, they’ve decided to split the money

Ivan broke up with his girlfriend

Heidi and Dmitry were dance partners before the show in Dancesport

Allison scrubbed dance floors to be able to pay for dance lessons

Heidi and Benji attended an LA LDS singles ward after practice one Sunday

Allison’s sister dances with Celine Deion already

Benji’s sister reported that Benji was in the hospital for 2 days due to strep throat and dehydration

Benji’s dad was scheduled to choreograph the show, but he turned it down so Benji could compete

Allison Holker and Jaymz Tuaileva went to a homecoming dance together at Timpanogos High School in Orem.

Benji danced for his literal life in Mexico once(see story).

Allison and Travis worked together last year, but are not together romantically(although Travis’s myspace says he does have a relationship, but doesn’t say with who).

My Favorite Audience Signs:
Benji, Father my Child
Choose the Benji (Similar to the LDS Choose the Right)

My Favorite Comment by sunsetcliffs:

Hey Benji I may be an older lady but you are the best donggone dancer I have ever watched. I own a adult foster home in the little town of Dallas Oregon and all my residents are pulling for you (voting for you too)My Oldest lady is 96!
Rock on Kid. We Love YOU!!!!!

Now on to our predictions:

My wife wanted to get in on the prediction action. However, she predicted the same thing as me:

Natalie Fotopoulos and Ivan Koumaev Are Going Home Tonight!!

Ivan has lasted long enough and Natalie is hurting too much. They’ve got to go. I can’t wait to see Ivan’s final solo!!

Allison Holker’s Final Solo from So You Think You Can Dance(SYTYCD)

Posted by techie on August 3, 2006

Man, the outpouring of love for Allison Holker’s departure from So You Think You Can Dance has been nuts. In just the last 12 hours I’ve gotten over 200 searches for Allison Holder sent to my site. This is a week after she was voted off the show. Incredible.

I found Allison’s final solo on YouTube for those who want to rewatch her final solo where she danced around Travis:

I figured out the answer to what Allison will do next. She said this in a recent interview:
“I’ve had a few offers here and there, just little things. It’s too early to say what I’m going to do, because I’m still under contract. We’re doing the tour, and there’s a lot going on, so we can’t really expect a whole lot right now. There’s a lot of teaching offers, convention things, even some modeling.”

Jockey Gets One-day Ban for Head-butting Horse – Video on ESPN

Posted by techie on August 3, 2006

ESPN just reported that a Jockey got a one-day ban for Head-butting a horse. Here’s the digg of the story. Here’s the original story from ESPN.

I’m amazed that a jockey would do this. However, when you see him get thrown off the horse you have to be a little sympathetic.

Enlightening Questions About So You Think You Can Dance(SYTYCD)

Posted by techie on August 3, 2006

While watching the latest episode of So You Think You Can Dance a lot of questions came to my mind. Just imagine we were watching the show together. These are the questions I’d ask you. Are you listening Nigel?

What was Cat wearing tonight?

Who would have thought that Natalie of all people wouldn’t be a morning person?

Should Ivan ever do Jive(or any other ballroom type dance)? Before you get mad, I LOVE Ivan’s solos just not his ballroom

Do you wish that Travis would just spin for his solos and stop with the rest of what he calls dance? Yes, I still don’t understand modern dance

Could Cat almost pulling up her shirt like Travis, quite possibly be the most exciting part of the night?

Wouldn’t you have rather seen Benji dance with his cousin Heidi? Even if Benji and Donyelle is a better storyline

Does America really care if Donyelle finishes her arm punches in the air? Follow up: Does Nigel really know anything about dance?

Was Natalie a stripper previous to the show?

Didn’t Heidi look Lovely doing a waltz? Oh yeah, Travis was out there too

Is it just me or do Ivan’s solos always seem to end the same way?

What an intro for Benji and Donyelle’s hip hop!!? I know that’s not a question, but it feels like one since it demands a response

Is Nigel afraid to say something bad about Benji and Donyelle? I’m just not sure if he’s trying to hurt or help them by not saying bad things

Have you ever seen a contemporary routine as “popping” as Ivan and Natalie’s?

Was Benji’s solo, “dancing” or just “shaking”? Give him a partner

Did Travis finally out dance my beloved Heidi in the earth dance? But I still prefer Heidi

What was Donyelle doing dancing contemporary when she’s a hip hop dancer? Maybe it’s because Donyelle already did a hip hop on this show. Still a MISTAKE

Wasn’t Mia Michaels’s comments perfect about the popularity of all these dancers?
I think that all of the dancers have a future in dancing. However, they aren’t singers. How many dancers have you heard that have gone on a dancer tour like Carrie Underwood can do? You can’t really sell a ton of CDs to people like a singer can. Although, I still think there is a lot of potential for my idea that Benji Schwimmer make a DVD of him dancing.

1/2 – Dana Andrews Kicked Off Rockstar Supernova and Michele Balan Kicked Off Last Comic Standing

Posted by techie on August 3, 2006

As a follow up to my previous predictions Lost Comic Standing and Rockstar Supernova Tonight – Michele Balan and Zayra Are Going Home. So I was completely off on picking Dana Andrews to be kicked off Rockstar Supernova. However, Michele Balan was really a no brainer to be kicked off Last Comic Standing. I guess picking 1/2 isn’t too bad.

I think I’m done predicting Rockstar Supernova. Last Comic Standing is going to be difficult now. Ty Barnett finally did better than Chris Porter which was a big surprise for me. So, sadly I think Chris Porter is going home next week. I feel bad for him since he really has some good material. However, he just didn’t do good last night. I guess we’ll see next week.

A Key Stroke Logger – Good or Evil?

Posted by techie on August 3, 2006

Doing computer security one of the worst things you can hear is that a computer has a keystroke logger on it. The only thing I could see being worse than a keystroke logger is some virus, worm or trojan horse that actually shuts your entire computer down. Otherwise, a keystroke logger is scary. Working in the healthcare industry I’m espescially concerned about a keystroke logger since that is a major HIPAA violation. Think about the passwords that could be caught by a keystroke logger. That password could open up your entire network to unauthorized access and you would have no way of knowing what was authorized and unauthorized access to your network.

Despite people’s inherent fear of keystroke loggers, they aren’t always bad. SpectorSoft has created a keystroke logger for home or businesses. This is a perfect way to keep track of what’s happening at home at work. Normally, a keystroke logger wouldn’t have any value for a home or business. However, SpectorSoft has done something that I haven’t personally seen in any other keystroke logger. They correlate the keystrokes by application, date and time. Finally the keystroke logging data is useful with little work involved.

Read a description of Spector Pro’s key logger:

Spector Pro includes what many consider to be the BEST key logger on the market, saving keystrokes by application, by date and time.

With Spector Pro, you will know what was typed, where and when it was typed, and you will also know WHO typed it because Spector Pro keeps a record of who is logged into the computer.

The Spector Pro Keystroke Recording tool will document every key typed on the PC keyboard. Spector Pro not only captures standard alphanumeric keystrokes, but also records “hidden” characters and keystroke combinations, such as the Shift and Ctrl key, as well as “true” keystrokes which may other-wise appear differently on screen (such as an * when a password is typed).

Keystroke recordings are organized chronologically by Application and by Window allowing you to easily differentiate between what is typed in a word processing document, email, spreadsheet, or Internet browser (even passwords).

I’m still concerned with keystroke loggers, but at least now I can see why a keystroke logger could be quite useful.

Old School Video of Benji Schwimmer Dancing – A Benji TV Network or DVD?

Posted by techie on August 3, 2006

Benji Schwimmer from So You Think You Can Dance is whooing women left and right with his little boy charm, his true gentleman character, his booty shaking and oh yeah, his dancing. If you don’t believe me then just read some comments from one of my previous posts about Benji Schwimmer. Many of my other So You Think You Can Dance posts have good juicy comments declaring their love to Benji also.

Today, I was thinking that if Benji were a TV network then it could simply be called Benji. If he then followed ESPN’s model, he could start a second network called Benji Classic. This network would of course play Benji’s “Classic” dances over and over again. One example of a video they could play is this fantastic video of Benji dancing with Tatiana Mollman:

Ladies!! Ladies!! Settle down. There’s plenty of Benji to go around. Do you like the idea?

Ok, maybe Benji as a TV network could be a bit of an exaggeration. However, I could see a lot of people buying Benji Schwimmer the DVD. How many of my readers would buy that?

To Benji: I’ll offer you my services creating a website to sell the DVD as long as you give me the opportunity to dance with your cousin Heidi.

A picture of Benji and Heidi much younger:

How precious!!
